A little bit of history…
We came up with the idea of holding an Argentine Tango practice session because we feel the need to practice Argentine Tango. Lessons are essential, but the learning is not solidified without practice, and lots of it!
Most mixed dances don’t play enough Argentine Tango, and dances are not really the venue for practicing. There are many Milongas in Vancouver that play only Argentine Tango, but again, these are not the venues for practicing. There are a few Practicas in Vancouver as well, but really none in our neighborhood of New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge or Mission. We thought: there are a lot of dancers in this area, perhaps they’d like a venue to practice Argentine Tango as well?
While we have fallen in love with Argentine Tango, we still enjoy the other dances, and still feel the need to practice them. So we thought of adding some of the other social dances into the mix: Rumba, Cha Cha, Salsa, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Nightclub Two-Step, Cross-step Waltz, Foxtrot, even the occasional Hustle!
And so you have Practica Tango+. We play tandas (sets) of three tangos followed by a full cortina of one of the other social dances. In a single session, we would play roughly eight tango tandas, and two to three tandas of milonga and vals. The focus is to practice, so everything is easy and informal. We have a friendly group, all wanting to practice and willing to help.
If you’d like to practice Argentine Tango, plus the other social dances, we hope to see you at our next Practica Tango+!
